Happy Museum Project book launch at Manchester Museum

This event wasn't quite what I had imagined. There wasn't a great deal of speaking beyond the mu tual congratulations. However, we received a copy of Happy Museum/Manchester Museum's Rules For A Playful Museum

I felt quite smug because after listening to the things other museums have been doing, I think we are already a very playful museum and I think that helps us across the team.

Playfulness is part of what makes us a unique venue for events and conferences.

Our visitors learn through play

Play keeps our morale high as a team, which makes this a happy place to work and no doubt increases productivity overall.

We are bubbling over with playfulness here. It's a hot topic, so we should be proud and shout about it. Do we have enough playfulness to share some beyond the museum walls?

I've put a copy of the publication in the staff room. I will try and find an unobtrusive way to get feedback on the booklet.  lot of the things Manchester Museum have done utilise their gallery assistants - perhaps we can think of a playful way to keep our gallery volunteers, who often get bored, engaged with the visitors?

Happy Museum Project also announced their 5 year plan. The plan ends with the dissembly of Happy Museum after 5 years. It is their hope that by then, their aims will have been fully embraced by the sector and museums will be running with happiness as an objective on their own. They hope that by 2020,

Well-being and Sustainability are as familiar and relevant to
museum thinking as Learning and
Participation
